Watersports

Can you imagine leaping over the waves in Dublin Bay with this fantastic city as a backdrop?  If you’re a keen windsurfer or would simply wish to try it out, Dublin will provide you with a treat to satisfy your need for excitement. The wind and waves that are provided by the Irish Sea are ideal for windsurfing and you’re sure to find many others enjoying the sport. If you’re still a greenhorn, experienced instructors will be on call to share a few tips and before you know it, you would have conquered the Irish waves.  Nearby shops will also provide you with all the required gear and accessories to become a windsurfing master.

If you prefer your adventure to take place beneath the waves, Dublin also offers several great diving sites that are accessible either from the shore or by boat.  The diving season is from early April until mid-October and if you hook up with a diving school, they’d be happy to show you some of the best diving locations at Dalkey Island and the Muglins Rock.  Several more sheltered sites are also ideal for beginners to embark upon their newfound passion for the underwater world.

The sea around Dublin also offers several wrecks that you can visit, such as the MV Leinster which sank in 1918, and the Bolivar which sank in 1947.  The marine life is also fascinating, with shoals of Pollack as well as an abundance of anemones and crustaceans – not to mention the very friendly and highly curious seal population. It is also worth remembering that if you have never dived in Irish waters before, most diving companies would require you to perform a local orientation dive before starting out so that you may get accustomed to the conditions.
