All right, so technically the Oxegen Music Festival happens in County Kildare which is southwest of Dublin and so therefore not strictly in Dublin itself. However, at less than an hour’s drive away, it’s close enough and the Oxegen Music Festival is easily an event of sufficient magnitude to make up for any irregularities.
Since 2004, this music festival has been featuring some of the biggest names in the international music scene. These have included such acts as the Darkness, Franz Ferdinand, Pink, the Black Eyed Peas, the Foo Fighters, Green Day, the Killers, the Kaiser Chiefs, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Placebo, Snow Patrol, Muse, and even James Brown before he died.
The festival’s line up is usually pretty much identical to the Scottish festival T in the Park which runs on the same weekend with the acts alternating their venue from one day to another.
Originally a two-day festival, the Oxegen Music Festival has been expanded to three days as of 2008. The attendance generally averages at around 80 000 people a day with around half that number camping on site for the duration of the festival. The guest singers, DJs, and bands perform on six different stages while two large areas accommodate the camper’s tents. An innovative feature is an actual funfair that stands next to the arena.
This includes such rides as a big wheel, a magic carpet, a big drop, and a rollercoaster. Portaloos and shower areas are also available but you would be wise to have relatively low expectations of these. But that shouldn’t be too bad – after all, most people go to the Oxegen Music Festival for the great music and wild atmosphere, and not for a particularly memorable toilet experience.
Certain items like bottle corks are not allowed in the concert areas whereas glass bottles are banned from the festival site altogether.
