Celebrate St Patrick’s Day

Without a doubt, the highlight of the Dublin events calendar is the annual celebration of St Patrick’s Day.

One of Ireland’s patron saints, Saint Patrick is commemorated on the 17th of March – the day when he is believed to have died.

From the United States, Great Britain, and Canada to Germany, Russia, and Korea, St Patrick’s Day is celebrated the world over and for that one day, everybody is considered to be Irish.
Although primarily a religious holiday, in the mid 1990’s the Irish government embarked upon a campaign to use St Patrick’s Day so as to showcase Ireland and its culture.

Nowadays St Patrick’s Day celebrations are lively and boisterous affairs with thousands of green-clad people thronging the streets and drinking Irish alcohol such as Guinness or Baileys.

The St Patrick’s Day celebrations are bound to be great fun no matter whereabouts in the world they happen to occur, however there can be no words to describe the amazing atmosphere that can be found in Dublin.

For five days and nights the streets of Dublin are jam-packed with over a million revellers and around 4000 entertainers.

Highlights usually include funfairs, music concerts, comedy acts, street theatre, art exhibitions, night spectacles, choir performances, and a circus to name but a few.  All these events culminate in the centrepiece of the entire festival, the spectacular St Patrick’s Day Parade on the 17th of March.

For over two hours this breathtaking parade weaves through the Dublin city centre accompanied by street theatre companies, ceremonial groups and international marching bands.

The exciting carnival atmosphere combined with the sheer energy of the people present makes St Patrick’s Day in Dublin an experience that everyone should sample at least once in their lifetime.

As can be expected, Dublin hotel rooms are in high demand during the St Patrick’s Day Festival so it would be advisable to book early.
