When compared to the Mediterranean and other more temperate seas, Irish Sea is perhaps not the best place to take a dip on account of it being quite cold. However, if you really fancy a swim in the open sea, you’re definitely not going to let a trifling matter like a bit of goose-bumps stand in your way.
Popular blue flag beaches include the 4km long Donabate Beach in North County Dublin, Seapoint Beach in Dun Laoghaire, which is popular with surfers, canoeists, and jet skiers, and the sheltered stony beach at Killiney. Balbriggan Beach is also a popular destination for swimmers and the resident colony of seals are a regular attraction. It is to be admitted however, that when one is trying to convince him/herself that the water isn’t particularly chilly, the presence of a seal can be somewhat of a hindrance. Most beaches would have a First Aid station and lifeguards on duty during the bathing season. It’s also worth bearing in mind that the currents can occasionally be quite strong and you shouldn’t swim too far out.
If you’re dying for a dip but the open sea just isn’t for you, you may prefer a public swimming pool. The Dublin City Council runs several such pools around the city and one can also find several commercial pools as well. Also, if you happen to be staying at a posh hotel, you can take a dip in a heated pool whenever you feel like.
