When you’re in the middle of a hard day’s shopping, you need to stop for a break eventually – even if just to quickly catch your breath and analyse your purchases. In Dublin, the best place for such a break is St Stephen’s Green.
Right at the end of Grafton Street, Dublin’s busiest pedestrian-only street and primary shopping artery, this 22-acre park affords a moment of tranquillity from the frenetic city-life.
Once a site for public executions, the park now boasts a central fountain, flowerbeds, a lake with waterfowl, a playground for children, a scented garden for the blind, and a Victorian bandstand which houses some wonderful lunchtime concerts during the summer months.
The Green is also distinguished by some unique features, including several monuments and the iconic Fusilier’s Arch which was erected in 1907 to commemorate the Royal Dublin Fusiliers who lost their lives in the Second Boer War.
At St Stephen’s Green, you can go for a quiet stroll along its meandering paths, or take a seat and observe the locals as they walk their dogs, spend time with their children, or escape the office for some fresh air and peace.
Once you’ve had enough relaxation, you can then head straight into the Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre just across the road. One of the country’s largest indoor shopping centres, you’ll be sure to spend hours wandering through over a hundred outlets within.
