Dublin Bay Prawns

Part of the fun of travelling is sampling the local cuisine and despite having a history that’s blighted by famine and poverty, Ireland boasts some truly amazing local delicacies for you to fall in love with.

Dublin Bay prawns are one of those delicacies that you simply must sample at some point in your life.  What’s more, in order to enjoy them to the full you really have to eat them while in Dublin.  The main reason is that these tender morsels are highly perishable and so need to be eaten as fresh as possible, and also because you’ll be hard-pressed to find a seafood restaurant outside of Dublin that will exhibit such a superior mastery with this classic dish.

The Dublin Bay prawn is a species of orange-pink lobster which is to be widely found in the north-eastern Atlantic and especially in the Irish Sea around Dublin Bay.  When cooked, the flesh becomes tender and white and the prawn may be grilled, sautéed, steamed, or poached.  When accompanied with herb mashed potatoes and roasted in butter, beer, peanut sauce and lemon grass, there are few meals that can beat a Dublin Bay prawn.

These little creatures are best enjoyed in good company in a good restaurant that is close enough to the sea that you can hear the seagulls outside.  Add to the mix a glass of good white wine and the excellent atmosphere that Dublin is so famous for and you’ve got all the required ingredients for a night to remember.
