Renting a car in Dublin is, quite frankly, a good idea. As with any other Northern European capital city the streets are chaotically busy and the city centre itself is small enough that most places of note are only a short walk or bus ride away from each other.
However part of the charm of Dublin is the rolling greenery right on the city’s doorstep – making a sharp but pleasant contrast with the hustle and bustle of the city itself. To get to these places, a car is all but essential.
All the major car hire companies have offices at the city centre and at the Dublin airport. In most cases, to rent a car you need to have held a full, clean driver’s licence for at least two years and be aged between 23 and 70.
Although some companies may be more flexible than others, generally you’ll need to be at least 21 to rent a car. Rental prices in Dublin are pretty reasonable although there are extra charges if you plan to travel into Northern Ireland.
Most cars are manual with automatic cars usually needing to be reserved in advance and coming at an additional expense. Since people in Ireland drive on the left side of the road, the overwhelming majority of hire cars would be right-hand drive.
Road signs in Ireland aren’t always terribly helpful but if you get yourself a good road map and stick to the main routes you should have no difficulties whatsoever. If however you should lose your way, you’ll find that most locals are extremely helpful and will be happy to point you in the right direction.
