Go on a Pub Crawl

All right, so technically the word ‘craic’ isn’t a traditional Irish word since it was coined in the 1970s by changing the spelling of the English word ‘crack’.  Nevertheless, despite the consistent complaining of a variety of Irish language scholars, the word ‘craic’ has now been firmly adopted by the Irish people and refers to the kind of fun and wild abandonment that one can only experience after consuming vast amounts of alcohol in an environment of Irish music and Irish friends.  It is a possibility that if these scholars were to spend less time moaning and instead enjoy a good craic themselves, the linguistic anomaly that offends them so much will soon fade to insignificance. In fact, when you’re enjoying a good craic, you’ll find that most things will tend to fade to insignificance.

Seriously, you’ll be hard-pressed to enjoy a better night out at any other city than Dublin as it boasts a great tradition of reputable and stylish pubs.  Most of these would be densely packed with young people during the evenings and many would feature some sort of live entertainment such as music or comedy. On Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays last orders are usually at 12:30am whereas during the rest of the week they’d be at 11:30pm.

The favoured drink is obviously Guinness or some other stout beer and the standard measure is the pint glass.  Simply asking for a ‘glass’ of beer will get you half a pint.  Ales and lagers are also popular with bottled beer usually being more expensive. The legal drinking age is 18 and you cannot smoke anywhere inside an Irish pub although most establishments will have a sheltered area outside where you can go and light up. The sheer fun atmosphere and ‘good craic’ to be had in Dublin makes the city a popular destination for bachelor parties and hens’ nights.
