One of the most idyllic ways to travel is the railway as it gets passengers to their destination quickly while also allowing them to see an ever-changing portrait of any given country’s landscape.
The Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) is the Republic of Ireland’s national railway system operator and a very good method of transport if you need to travel within Greater Dublin or from Dublin to another city. That way you can sit down comfortably and take in the lush and famously abundant green of the Irish countryside as it rushes past you.
The Intercity service caters for long-distance routes to and from such cities as Cork, Limerick, Tralee, Ennis, Galway, Waterford, Rosslare Europort, Sligo, Westport and Ballina. A train service is also available to Belfast in Northern Ireland although this is a separate enterprise that is run jointly with Northern Ireland Railways.
As you can see, the railway connects Dublin to all the major cities in Ireland, making it an ideal base from where you can explore the entire country. Trolley services on the trains provide food and drink while some routes would also include a restaurant service.
The Commuter services in Dublin cover the Northern, Western, South Western, and South Eastern areas of the city – providing an efficient train service to and from the city centre. The North-South route along Dublin’s eastern coastal side is covered by the DART.
