Dublin has a reputation as the place to go for a good party – possibly involving the consumption of vast amounts of alcoholic beverages.  Therefore it stands to reason that the city would be furnished with more than its fair shares of pubs and bars. However the city is equally renowned for the famous writers that were either born or inevitably drawn there.  It is hardly surprising then that Dublin is also seen as a haven among book lovers the world over.

Although mainstream bookshop brands such as Waterstones can be found in Dublin selling all the latest releases, the city specialises in booksellers that deal in second hand and remaindered books, transforming a trip to the bookshop into a veritable treasure hunt as you unexpectedly find that one book you never even knew existed or had long been out of print.  Imagine the delight when you stumble upon an old book that is completely unobtainable on even the most dedicated second hand websites.  Imagine now the added delight upon discovering that your precious find comes at a bargain price.

Recommended bookshops are Murder Ink on Dawson Street which specialise in US crime fiction, and Book Upstairs at College Green which is well-worth the visit even if it’s just to admire the quirky and charming arrangement of the interior.  One of the largest selections of second hand books will be found at Chapters in Parnell Street.  This megastore has a very wide range and even exchanges books.

In fact, they are so proud of their selection that if you don’t find the book that you came in for, you would be encouraged to inform the staff. Although you will no doubt discover even more gems lurking in cobbled alleyways, another alternative is to head to a book market.  These are also quite common events in Dublin and a fine open-air example can be found at the Temple Bar every Saturday.
